First, Please Do This.

WE ARE NEWTOWN – What happened in Newtown on 12/14 can happen in any community…and it does.  Please change your hometown in your Facebook profile to Newtown until 12/14 in a show of solidarity and to #HonorWithAction the 30,000+ lost to gun violence each year.  Also align your profile picture using the image here, to show that “We are all Newtown”.  Demonstrate how we are all inseparably linked by the epidemic of gun violence in America.

Another certainty though, is that despite our frazzled nerves and fragile emotional state, we will get through this.  The love and support, all of the new friendships that have been formed, the overwhelming sense of community from near and far, and the kindness….all of this wonderfulness will get us through the upcoming week.  We will get through this….together.  One thing that has become undeniably clear over this past year, is….that We Are Newtown.  And Newtown is more than a tragedy.  Newtown is hope, peace & love.   Newtown is kindness. We Are ALL Newtown.

ACTS OF KINDNESS – NEW BRITAIN, CT  – Monday, December 9, 10am.  Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) and Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) will join members of the Newtown Foundation, the Newtown Action Alliance and Connecticut United Way President Richard Porth to launch a week of “Acts of Kindness” in honor of the twenty innocent children and six courageous educators who lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown one year ago. Town officials in Newtown have asked that the one year anniversary be treated with respect to allow the community to heal and are urging those who wish to honor the memory of the victims to engage in acts of kindness in their own communities.
Immediately following the press conference, participants will kick off the week by reading to children and participating in classroom activities at the YWCA in New Britain.
Throughout the week, Esty and her staff will be volunteering across Connecticut and in Washington, D.C. Esty has also invited Members of Congress and their staff to perform acts of kindness during the week in Washington, D.C. and in their communities.
Members of the Newtown Foundation and the Newtown Action Alliance will be travelling to Washington, D.C. later in the week to encourage the country to appropriately honor the innocent lives lost by pausing for reflection and participating in acts of kindness to improve their own communities. There will also be a national vigil marking the one year anniversary of the Newtown tragedy held for all victims of gun violence at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, December 12, at 3:45 PM.  Limited seating on the free Newtown bus is still available.  Send email to hsmith@newtownaction.org if you’d like to join us.
